Automation Hell - when it all goes wrong

September 26, 20231 min read

When Business Automations go wrong…

I’ve been in the marketing and sales automation game now for a long time and its been painful and hilarious at times watching even famous multinational corporations make classic automation mistakes. To be honest, I’ve made a few myself too and learnt rather grating lessons. Here’s a few to avoid…

1. I’ve been the client of a large multi-million dollar marketing agency and it amazed me that I remained on their marketing campaign list even after I’d become their client. TIP 1. Create an automation in your business software that removes all paid up clients from all marketing and nurture campaigns 😊

2. I love getting ‘Hi FIRST NAME‘ in my emails from marketers - even the best have made this mistake and can be avoided by using a default value. TIP 2. Always add a default value to your name field like FRIEND or even just a comma.😊

3. We’ve all received just a random email or SMS campaign that obviously isn’t for us or anything to do with us (think democrat when we’re republican or visa versa). Someone has obviously started an automated campaign without enough care TIP 3. Most decent automation software has a ‘test campaign’ option where the marketer can test the deliverability, the contact segment and the embedded fields TEST TEST TEST.

Automation is worth the occasional pain and we do get better at it as time goes by :) So Keep Calm and Carry On Automating …
